Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School (BRGS) boasts a storied legacy dating back to its establishment in 1701 as Newchurch Grammar School. It moved to its current location in 1913 and was later renamed Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School. Presently, the school upholds its co-educational and selective status, admitting students based on their performance in the 11 Plus examination. With an enrollment of around 1,300 students, BRGS provides education from Year 7 to the Sixth Form. The grammar school is well-respected for its robust academic achievements, consistently achieving high rankings in UK school league tables. Notably, a recent 21.8% of all GCSE grades were awarded the highest grade 9.

Lancanshire 11+ Exam consists of three papers comprising of English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning.

The 11+ examination for Lancashire grammar schools comprises three multiple-choice tests, each assessing distinct skills:


1. English – This section, lasting 45 minutes, evaluates comprehension, vocabulary, and technical English skills.

2. Mathematics – With a duration of 50 minutes, this test focuses on assessing problem-solving and arithmetic skills. The emphasis is on numerical reasoning and foundational mathematical concepts.

3. Verbal Reasoning – Spanning 50 minutes, this paper evaluates the ability to comprehend and process language, assess textual information, and draw logical conclusions from written passages.
